If you recently bought your first home (or are planning on it), you have much to look forward to.

It’s also important to protect your property. New homeowners are especially vulnerable to  security risks as you’re likely new to your neighborhood and just beginning to understand your home.

Here are six ways for new homeowners to boost home security:

  1. Analyze your neighborhood’s security situation online
Whether you’re buying a home or new to the neighborhood, you should know the neighborhood’s security situation and crime levels. A range of websites let you search for crime rates by zip code. There are also online social networks that help you know what’s going on in your neighborhood.
  2. Drive around your neighborhood
During the day and evening on both weekdays and weekends, drive all over the neighborhood to get an up-close understanding of it.
  3. Get to know your neighbors

If you’re new to the neighborhood, take time to get to know your neighbors. They’ll be able to give valuable information on neighborhood safety, and can keep an eye on your house if you need to travel (you can also return the favor). Also join the neighborhood watch program, if one exists.

  4. Perform a home security audit

Inspect all of your home’s entry points and windows to look for malfunctioning (or outdated) locks. Promptly replace all faulty locks, and look into installing electronic door locks. If your garage has an electronic door code, change the code from the previous owner.

  5. Write down emergency service numbers

In an emergency, it’s easy to forget your emergency service numbers. In most cases, these are 911, but some smaller communities have their own number. The poison control number is 1-800-222-1222. Also make sure to write down the cell phone numbers of close family members and friends.

  6. Install a home security system

There are many options for home security systems. Take time to research your options, and consider a
smart home security system that uses to technology to improve your safety.
